Community Building - The lifeblood of a project
Without a doubt, community plays an essential role in the success of any project, both Web2 and Web3. In the spirit of decentralization and community-owned governance, this is even more important for crypto projects.
Old School
Due to its relatively young birth, many crypto projects have the mentality of the corporate and traditional world, meaning that they believe if the product is good, users will naturally come and use it. This is expectable given that the corporate world and hierarchy have existed for hundreds of years, while Ethereum is only 6 years. The average lifespan of crypto projects, according to research, is just 2 years.
However, decentralized crypto projects are fundamentally different from centralized companies and should be built and managed differently too. A crypto project is supposed to be run by a decentralized community of interested developers and other stakeholders. Yet when developing most crypto projects, a core team would source capital from a small subset of investors, build products in isolation, deliver and then expect the wider community to take an interest in something they were never involved with.
This approach seldom works and has been the demise of multiple crypto projects over the years, notable EOS, while even meme coins with strong communities like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu have survived the test of time.
The new path
The current trend is "community first," in which the project prioritizes the opinions of its community members in development decisions over their own vision. The community's feedback becomes a democratic tool for gaining traction and popularizing a project as a product designed for the users, not just the founders.
Social media is playing a key role in fostering such a community-oriented approach, as it is becoming the key communication instrument in spreading the word about a project and garnering support. By resorting to the community-first business model, recent projects have been able to attract significant numbers of followers for product testing and application, which has also raised awareness about the project in investor circles.
Take Polkadot for example. Its CEO, Gavin Wood, is a notable figure in the crypto industry, having developed Solidity and once took the position of CTO in Ethereum. He frequently communicated his vision of Web3 and a multichain future to the audience. It is amazing to know that Polkadot has been in development for over 4 years and we have the opportunity to witness the first parachains on it, with dozens more to come in the future. Moreover, he founded Web3 Foundation and has provided grants to hundreds of Substrate projects, including very famous and innovative projects such as Moonbeam, Astar, Centrifuge, …

Other successful Layer-1 blockchains all have a charismatic head figure, such as Cardano with Charles Hokinson, Near with Illia Polosukhin, …
The opinions and data of users online make up the new gold of the 21st century, and companies worldwide are engaged in a battle for control over it. The blockchain market is one of the most affected by this struggle, as it has turned out that the opinions of the community will mean the difference between life or death for a project and its idea.
